Henrik KlaggesManaging Partner

First of all, thanks for the feedback, it really helps us in making better management decisions. Next, here a reply with explanations and a bit of context for our readers.

Of course there is pressure to work enough billable hours, because otherwise the company would go under. It is our raison d'être to perform a lot of valuable IT work that clients want and pay for. As TNG cherishes freedom and individualism, and because with great freedom comes great responsibility, this duty also extends to each individual.

Now, the obvious question is, what is "enough"? Here, a look at the competition helps. Our typical competitors are requiring their people to work 200+ more billable hours per year more than we do, based on a 40-hour work week. Now, TNG a) invests heavily into learning and training and b) is super efficient. Therefore we chose to - and can afford to - exert less pressure on our people to bill. But the baseline has to be there.

It is true that it is not easy to get a part time position in our consulting branch. The reasons are again very simple: For people with not enough time, it is difficult to experiment and learn enough to be at the forefront of technology or at least stay up-to-date. However, to be at the forefront is where we are positioning ourselves in the market, and that is what our clients want.

We have experimented with parttime now for over ten years, and the empirical results are clear, stable and unpleasant: Really significant parttime, such as 20-30h workweeks, doesn't function in consulting. 35h can work, but not just like that. Also, we try to allocate the few positions where parttime seems viable to people under extra load, such as young parents.

It is also true that projects are varying a lot in many parameters. Of course, we try to find projects that optimize many of them. However, there are market realities that can dictate otherwise. Also, we try to be very loyal to our clients over the longterm, which necessitates our willingness to support them also in projects that are marginal or sometimes even uncool. We go through thick and thin.

Regarding environmental and social awareness: We think this is harder to measure than simple parameters such as billable hours. It depends on perspective. We are no fans of permanent virtue signalling, a "holier-than-thou" competition, where we would trumpet to the world how saintly we are. We think it matters more how the company behaves in the real world, towards the people we meet. For the sake of the argument: There are over ten charitable organisations, each year newly prioritized by our employees, who receive donations from us. We co-wrote and donated important software for housing allocation for Ukrainian refugees and loaded a minibus full with supplies. But this is something we rather do more than talk about it more.
