I highly recommend working at REWE as a UX designer. They have lots of products to work on, so you will never get bored.
Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich
respect, variety of projects, carrer development and education budget, flexiblity, the cantine food is a 5 star hotel class in my opinion as a foodie, my manager is a nice person, half time home office
Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich
bad is a big word, there are stuff that needs to be improved which I mentioned above. But nothing I would say is bad
Verbesserungsvorschläge
- use Slack instead of microsoft teams.
- support for Mac OS, if you have a problem with your work Macbook the IT does only provide support for Windows and Linux devices
- cover transportation expenses. but I have been told that there will be full transportation reimbursment in the future. And if you travel for work they totally cover it
- limit meeting to specific slots. In general there should be no meeting after 3 pm. but this highly depends on your colleagues and you can excuse yourself from the meeting if your participation does not make sense, so it is not obligatory
- as the company still has more german speakers than non german speakers there are still some official documents that are sent in German, maybe it makes sense to also provide a german translation for them. But honestly they helped me with the translation so it was not much of an obstacle to me
Arbeitsatmosphäre
The office space:
I work in the wiener Neudorf office. And the office has everything you need, Cantine Kitchen which cooks very good meals for affordable prices. (ex: scnitzel & pommes for 3 euros), vending machines, good free coffee, AC, and all kind of hardware that you would need.
Kommunikation
Despite being a corporate they somehow try to work agile and has a flat communication, I am a UX specialist but in the same office with me sits the CPO for POS systems and people with 20 years of experience. Also if you need something from other departments (marketing for example) people are usually very responsive.
One point to improve with communication is to have fixed time slots for meetings, sometimes I can have 4 meetings in the same day. But this also because other people only have time at this day.
Kollegenzusammenhalt
People:
Everyone was respectful and welcoming, also people like to help you. So as a working environment for Expats, I highly recommend it. Also unlike other employers language switch between German and english is never a problem since it is an international company at the end.
Work-Life-Balance
Coming from startups, I worked in startups for the last 4 years. I would say working at REWE is definetly less stressful. You have a clear role to do and things are more organized. That said, if you also need a vacation or leave work early sometimes for other commitments, this is no problem for them as long as you fulfill your weekly hours and do your tasks. Also thanks to the flextime, I can also start working at 11:00 because sometimes I have German or physiotherapy classes in the morning.
Vorgesetztenverhalten
referring to the point of communication I dont see this as a problem. My manager is a very nice person, we have a smooth communication and as a designer I have more freedom to be creative without bossy behaviour or anything of this sort.
Interessante Aufgaben
They have lots of products to work on, so you will never get bored. Tablet apps, cash registers, embedded devices, mobile apps, internal applications, web apps, marketing websites, also because they have 5 main brands this also adds variety to your everyday work.
point to improve: sometimes you need to document what you do, but this depends on the project you work on, some projects doesnt require too much documentation.
Gleichberechtigung
i would say they give equal opprotunities to everyone and judge you solely on your performance. Of course if you worked more years in the company you get more benefits like a company car for example. But there is no bossiness or discrimination I faced in REWE.
Umgang mit älteren Kollegen
I would say that the the high level managers I spoke to soo far did not give me any feeling of superiority, they rather listen and open for contributions. Also most of them had no problem speaking english with me.
Arbeitsbedingungen
there is not really any point to criticize her. I would say everything you want you would get. Except for some softwares that you might not be allowed to install on company devices for security reasons.
Umwelt-/Sozialbewusstsein
As much as they can they save energy and consumption. Lights unused are usually switched off. A cleaning person clean the office everyday. Everything is disinfected. They encourage people without forcing them to reduce papier and plastic use. Also food-wise in the Cantine there are more vegan options introduced everyday.
Gehalt/Sozialleistungen
The salary of REWE is average depending on my experience. I am a mid senior so comparing myself to other colleagues I would say it is a fair deal. Also you get so many discounts. They pay for my german courses which costs 400 euro per month. They also give discounted gym supscriptions. So I would say working there saves me 300 euros per month on average, compared to when I used to pay for my own german courses, gym access, and unlimted WLAN modem.
Image
it is definetly very good on your CV to work in REWE, they are the biggest food retail brand in europe and they have very complex and challenging applications to richen your portfolio.
Karriere/Weiterbildung
I would say REWE is the best employer I worked with when it comes to career development and educational allowance. You have 2 hours per week for further development, you get any course regardless how much it cost for free. You even get the chance to travel on their costs to get a course or a workshop.
