As a full-time employee, it was the most toxic working environment I’ve ever experienced. As the only native English speaker and female scientific employee in the business unit at that time, I faced a severe level of discrimination and misogynist behavior.
Here are a few highlights:
- Being hardworking, motivated and proactive are actually disadvantageous when it comes to working there. Because it meant that colleagues would most likely 'delegate' their work to you.
- Due to my limited German language skills, I worked in isolation most of the time, to which, a particular colleague took advantage of this situation. I worked long hours doing his work (among others’) on top of mine, and as a result, burned out multiple times and faced other health issues.
- My role as a 'Scientific Assistant' was far from accurate: project manager, product manager, dev ops, marketing, default English editor, etc. This went unnoticed since the aforementioned colleague took credit for my work. Because he was a favored employee, the bosses were under the impression that I did not do much.
- In small project meetings, only German was spoken, despite the fact that attendees were fluent in English
