- Toxic Culture: While many blame the Korean management, toxic experiences also come from micromanaging German leaders. Independently of nationality, age or gender, the leadership generally behaves the same way. They foster a high-pressure and stress environment with an overwhelming workload and a stricking lack of empathy.
Also, there is a lot of talking behind people's back and hipocresy between colleagues. You hear people critizing and saying the worse things about each other, only to compliment them or even publicly praise them on LinkedIn later.
There are many cases of colleagues being terminated during their probation period. I've heard they often dismiss during this time with the justification of "not being a good cultural fit". In HME they are very selective about who they “let in” and you have to play “their game” to succeed. As a new joiner, you will be thrown into cold water and be expected to survive.
- Micromanagement: The management here it's around control and asserting authority. You are always expected to go the "extra-mile", and you have to continually prove yourself to be enough. There is constant pressure and everything is considered urgent, even though it is clearly not.
Also, the management style is very hierarchical and old-fashioned. I have seen situations where in big groups, decisions have been simply taken by one person, without considering anyone's opinions. Despite disagreeing with it, employees are afraid to say anything and will only complain about it once the meeting is over or the person has left.
- Lack of flexibility: You have a very limited amount of days to work from home and you have to manage them per quarter. You are required to submit the days you want to work remotely in a system and the manager has to approve them beforehand. Forget about doing more than 2 days in a row at home-office, since most managers don't like the idea of not seeing you in person for that long and will control if you do. Even having this option, some teams are not allowed to work from home at all because their manager doesn't want them to.
Also, the flexible working hours concept they promise during the recruitment process is not real.
- No work-life balance: In order to succeed in this company, you have to sacrifice your personal life. There are collagues that receive emails after working hours with tasks that are "very urgent" for that same day. There are also cases where employees where contacted and requested to work while being on vacation. There’s no system to track working time, so most people do extra hours every day with zero compensation or recognition in return.
- Very bureaucratic: They have very long processes for everything. In order to get the most simple approval, you need to fill in a long template and ask for several signatures from different employees.
