Used to be an inspiring, motivating & rewarding workplace
Gut am Arbeitgeber finde ich
- Very modern work environment, among the very best (tooling, flexibility, mindset etc...)
- Great office in Munich
- Tough challenges & a tough target market
Schlecht am Arbeitgeber finde ich
That I would no longer recommend Capmo as a great place to work. It used to be different.
Verbesserungsvorschläge
- Put attention back on people and reserve space for people management
- Develop a stronger spine against the board pressure, not all input needs to be executed immediately
- Stop justifying immense pressure with high urgency and founder-mode and stop making people that have a different view feel bad about it
Arbeitsatmosphäre
The pressure to deliver increased dramatically in 2023 and especially after multiple layoff rounds. Do way more with less, which is very much in line with SaaS at the moment. It was not beneficial for the atmosphere. Expectations are great, raising the bar as well - and that requires more guidance, better expectation management and people management instead of just increasing pressure. There was no time to manage people properly, or for trust, since managers themselves were overwhelmed with pretty much everything. Great folk was layed off, made leave or left on their own. Not all of them, but most.
Kommunikation
One of Capmos strong suits. Frequent allhands, structured Slack channels and a high sensitivity for timely communication. What was lacking is trusting that people will understand also difficult messages, numbers and the truth. Capmo tried to make it "easy" for everyone by sugarcoating messages, selecting only "easy" numbers and generally not treating the people like grownups. I think this could have been bolder, more straightforward, especially in the allhands.
Kollegenzusammenhalt
Exceptional in my time. Great people, great collaboration.
Work-Life-Balance
Everyone had to work more, a lot more. It was not explicitly mentioned, but people were approached regarding putting in more hours. Which isn't the most motivating approach to get better results. Generally though, Capmo put attention to work-life balance, at least during my time.
Vorgesetztenverhalten
Founder-mode active ;) Nearly all middle management and leadership was layed off, made leave or left on their own. Founders struggle a lot to cover for that, were overwhelmed themselves and covered with more pressure. Founder-mode isn't bad, it's just hard to execute and not loose good folk. Trust was not the primary focus any longer.
Interessante Aufgaben
As always, depends on the role, but generally great challenges, tough problems and great purpose as construction is as digitized as a fax machine.
Gleichberechtigung
As far as I was aware, there were aligned salary bands for every role & level, no difference between gender etc. If that was always respected, I cannot tell.
Arbeitsbedingungen
Capmo moved to a new office in 2023, a huge one (was planned for a time where forecasts were different), way too large for the Munich people. Hence it was quite empty. Still, modern space, loads of rooms and callboxes, certainly among the very best. Now, people have to return to the office twice a week and parts are sublet. Make of it what you will. No issues with hardware and equipment, you get everything you need and in high quality.
Gehalt/Sozialleistungen
Good. Nothing more, nothing less. Everyone gets equity, so that's a bonus.
Image
Capmo projects an image internally that I don't think it has on the market. They put all efforts on becoming an enterprise player, starting from a SMB tool. Unfortunately, many learnings journeying through the mid-market were to hasty due to pressure from the board closing much more larger deals. It should have been executed with more endurance instead of a sprint. Now, it's hard to close the largest customers since the product isn't there yet. But generally, the product has developed a reputation in the market and is no longer a small tool.
Karriere/Weiterbildung
Startups generally don't offer many opportunities for growth if they're not in growth mode themselves. Generally, Capmo had a well-structured approach to performance reviews, among the best I've seen. There was not enough time for individuals and managers to really focus on personal development though as expectations were so high that it was impossible for everyone to ever get close (what I said above). Also, salary increases are (logically) tied to performance. If even, you'd get a tiny increase. Again, not super motivating.
