I wanted to share an update with you, as I was once one of you and still feel connected to the experiences we’ve shared. This post remains visible despite the challenges it has created for me in finding new job opportunities, as I believe it’s important to shed light on what happened—not just to me, but to many others.

For those who may not know my story, in October 2023, I relocated to Germany to join Mytheresa, traveling 13 hours from Asia across 8 time zones. I spent months preparing, securing a work visa, and transitioning into my new role. While I was offered a full-time position, my employment was abruptly terminated after just 10 days. I was treated as if I were a temporary worker, with my short tenure used to justify my termination. This disregard for the preparation and effort I had invested was heartbreaking.

This forced me to return to my home country, leaving me in a precarious position due to language barriers and visa constraints, which made finding alternative employment in Germany nearly impossible. The financial burden was also significant, as relocation costs far exceeded the company’s insufficient support. Even when I tried to negotiate, they remained unyielding, forcing me to involve a lawyer.

After sharing my experience online, Mytheresa threatened legal action, despite my employment already being terminated. Thankfully, my lawyer defended my rights, ensuring my post—based on factual, personal experience—remained visible under laws protecting freedom of speech.

Since then, I’ve learned that my case was not unique. Through conversations with former colleagues and research, I’ve discovered that many international employees at Mytheresa faced similar abrupt terminations after significant personal and financial investments. These practices reflect a troubling lack of transparency, fairness, and accountability.

What makes this even harder to accept is the stark contrast between Mytheresa’s public image and its internal practices. Their quarterly reports boast growth and dominance in the luxury fashion market, yet they fail to acknowledge the human cost—layoffs, mistreatment of staff, and the exploitation of international employees.

In response to these events, I attempted to organize a class-action lawsuit to advocate for others affected under similar circumstances. While the initiative didn’t fully succeed due to settlements, I remain committed to bringing attention to these practices and promoting fairness for all employees.

Looking back, this was one of the most difficult periods of my life. However, it was also a time of growth and learning. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with incredible professionals who’ve faced similar challenges, and their stories have inspired me to keep pushing forward.

Ten days after commencing employment, following onboarding activities such as online photography and receiving new hire gifts, I, along with 10% of the workforce, experienced unexpected termination. This included colleagues who had relocated to Germany, having already made significant life adjustments.

Kommunikation

Communication is unidirectional; they issue directives rather than engaging in dialogue. Attempts at reciprocal communication are unsuccessful. Even after publishing my experiences online, I received legal threats demanding their removal, necessitating the engagement of my own legal counsel.

Kollegenzusammenhalt

There is no union in place, leaving employees feeling vulnerable and apprehensive. A significant portion of those laid off were foreign workers, who often have limited rights and protections in a foreign country. While HR has denied any wrongdoing, it is evident that foreign workers are being exploited within the organization.

Work-Life-Balance

To facilitate professional development, I relocated and secured accommodations near my workplace, minimizing commute time. However, securing suitable housing proved challenging, requiring significant investment with limited overall financial equilibrium.

The communication within the organization is entirely one-sided — management gives orders, and employees are expected to comply without question. There is little to no effort to listen to employees or understand their circumstances. Instead, they rely on external legal counsel, specialized in corporate law, to address issues, further emphasizing their disregard for the workforce.

Despite claiming to prioritize employee welfare, their actions tell a different story. In a local interview, the CEO once stated that the company does not engage in layoffs, even during challenging economic times, as they are committed to hiring and supporting employees. However, this statement was later proven false when the company conducted a massive, unannounced layoff in a single day. The only acknowledgment of this event was a brief statement expressing that it might be a "tough day for some" with a simple "sorry," leaving employees feeling dismissed and undervalued.
