I applied for the HRBP role online, and a recruiter reached out to me, inviting me for the 1st interview with a senior HRBP. So far - so good. However, the interview itself was a disaster.
I joined the call and we had a short round of intros. The person interviewing me gave me a couple of details about the company's structure. What followed was:
- Pointing out to me that they needed a native German speaker (this is a discriminatory remark btw, an HRBP should know the 101 of HR). It is very clear from my CV that I have a C1 level German but am not a native speaker. However, I do speak at a professional level, and the interview was held in German. The interviewer herself was not a native speaker, and I dare say one could argue who had a better language level. :)
- She asked to describe my experience with work councils and Tarigverträge. I know this is often required in bigger companies, so I explicitly state in my motivational letter that I lack direct experience with these, but am a fast learner. She then proceeded to tell me that they already had better candidates than me with relevant experience.
- She noted that the industry (insurance) knowledge was essential. It is more than clearly stated in my CV that I only worked for tech companies.
Long story short, it felt like they only invited me for an interview to point out that I was not good enough and not a suitable candidate at all. 20 min into the scheduled 1-hour call, she told me directly it was a "no". Then why invite me? Align with your recruitment team before you kick off the hiring process. 101 of HR once again... A very negative experience that was a complete waste of my time and the accommodations I made to make it to the interview. Would never apply again.
